MIse-en-scene list

Props:
  • Instruments (guitar, microphone, drum kit, bass guitar) - shows the role of each band member. also appeals to the target audience as rock fans enjoy watching bands perform
  • Clocks - Element of disjuncture. The main theme in the promo is the loss of time. Smashing clocks at the end of the video will illustrate our character's hatred for his loss of time
  • Hammer/bat - will be used by protagonist at end of promo to smash the clocks
Costume:
  • Protagonist/singer will wear a lighter denim jacket with a TShirt and dark jeans - conventional to rock genre as it is realistic; not extravagant or expensive looking
  • Guitarist - Leather jacket with TShirt and jeans - target audience expects a rock band to be wearing leather jackets
  • Drummer - TShirt and jeans - casual, realism
Actors:
  • Protagonist/singer: James Girard - has extensive drama experience, will take main stage
  • Guitarist: Andy Cartwright - has experience playing the guitar
  • Drummer: Michael Montgomery - plays the drums
Lighting:
  • Medium-key lighting in the 'clock room' - an aggressive scene. Doesn't want to be too light to spoil the mood of the scene. Also doesn't want to be too dark so that we can not see what's going on
  • Low-key lighting in studio - we want it to look professional so we are choosing to use spotlights to illuminate band members
Setting:
  • Studio - where the band will perform. Looks professional and we can perform with space in the studio
  • Quiet street - Where the protagonist will wonder. We want it to look like a realistic, every-day setting
  • Clock room - Where the protagonist will aggressively destroy the clocks at the end of the promo

Auditions

Ryan was our first auditionee for the main role. He showed great enthusiasm but lacked the experience to make the performance look realistic. His position on screen was too relaxed and didn't look comfortable when signing, this made it clear to us that Ryan wouldn't be suitable for the main role. As well Ryan's personality was the polar opposite to the protagonists, this would make it difficult for even an experienced actor to make the role convincing. James was our second auditionee. James was very thorough with his preparation up to the performance which made him look very professional. Also when he was performing he looked very comfortable and seemed to fit the protagonists role very well, his posture and style of singing complimented the song. Furthermore, James has an extensive background in performances like plays and musicals which means he has a lot of experience in front of a crowd. We will consider James for the role of protagonist. Harry was our last auditionee. Harry was also very thorough with his preparation up to the performance, this made him look very good but when it came to the performance he didn't seem serious enough, this made us think about how he would perform in the real production. However, during his performance he looked very comfortable and has had a lot of real life experience singing for a band, this makes his audition very strong but because of the non-serious performance we believe that he wouldn't be suitable for the role.

Digipak analysis

This is an analysis of The Kooks, AC/DC and Foo Fighters digipaks:

The Kooks are a rock band from Brighton, and are very successful. They differ from the two band below because of the style that they play, they use light guitar and bass effects and have more of an indie rock sound. They are also represented as being messy and wearing dark modern clothing, this makes them unique and differ from the other two bands.

AC/DC are a hard rock band that from Australia and were very successful. Their style of playing is very unique and comes across as being very wreck less and extreme, their songs often contain lyrics about women, alcohol and drugs. Women are sung about as sexual objects and the genre adheres to Laura Mulveys male gaze theory where women ares treated as equals but as objects.

Lastly, Foo Fighters are a post-grunge band from America. They are very successful and still are. The genre of the band is very iconic with the rough look and are often more orientated to the performance rather than the bands image.

Magazine advert analysis

Metallica are a heavy metal/rock band from America. They are most know for their fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive songs, this is a very common convention within the genre, also the song conatin a lot of references to women. Women are sung about as sexual objects. The genre adheres to Laura Mulveys theory where women ares treated as objects, very similarly to hard rock.

Michael Bublé is an Successful singer and songwriter. He performs different genre song ranging from pop rock to traditional pop, his songs are very slow paced and are quite feminist. The songs dont discriminate against women and it subverts against Laura Mulveys theory.
